Yamaha FIAT YZR-M1

January 19, 2008 Yamaha unveiled its 2008 YZR-M1 MotoGP machine this week in a large event held in conjunction with sponsors Fiat in Turin, Italy. Last year the M1 was one of the slowest machines on the grid and played a major role in Valentino Rossi’s worst season for a decade, prompting Rossi to roundly criticise the machine publicly and Yamaha to test a V4 configuration and pneumatic valves in the hope of closing the horsepower gap to Ducati’s desmodromic valve system. With Honda employing a pneumatic valve system in its 2008 machine, Yamaha will be the only contender relying on traditional valve springs to close its valves this year. Despite this, Yamaha’s frightfully expensive throttle control system (Rossi) shares favouritism for the title with Ducati’s Casey Stoner (both 6/4).
With Rossi attempting to remove one of the key variables in the championship-winning equation by moving from Michelin tyres to the same Bridgestone tyres as his principal rival (Stoner), he could well be playing into the hands of the Michelin-shod Honda RC212V of Dani Pedrosa who the bookies have as third favorite at 7/2.
Ducati’s new signing Marco Melandri (14/1) and Rossi’s new teammate Jorge Lorenzo (20/1), who will run Michelins, round out the betting leaderboard just prior to pre-season testing beginning again this week.
No details of the new M1 motor were released at the launch, but the bike appears to be entirely new in every respect.
The presentation was hosted by Italian TV star Simona Ventura and took place at the historic Lingotto building, which was Fiat’s car factory from 1923 until 1982. The building features a unique rooftop test track.
“I’m very happy that we’re so close to the start of racing,” said Rossi, who will contest this season on Bridgestone tyres for the first time. “This is a very important year for us and our only aim is to win, although it’s going to be hard work. My hand is much better, if not yet perfect, and I’m looking forward to getting back on the bike in Sepang next week. Everyone has been working very hard over the winter and I think our new bike is quite good, although of course we still have a lot of work to do. Everyone is very motivated and I know that we have the best team there is.”
Lorenzo, whose M1 will be Michelin-shod this season, enjoyed his first official day as a Yamaha rider. “I’m very happy to be here, with these people, this bike and in this team. I have a long way to go in my development but I have improved each time I’ve ridden the bike and the last test especially was very good. I’m very excited about this season and it’s a great honour to share the garage with Valentino, who is without doubt the most complete talent in our sport.”
Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, commented, “We’re very pleased to be continuing our strong partnership with our title sponsor Fiat. Meanwhile, the most important change to our team is the arrival of Jorge Lorenzo as Valentino Rossi’s new team-mate. Our aim is to recapture the title and, as our most experienced rider, this is Valentino’s clear mission. However we also expect Jorge to be fighting at the front as he gains experience. We have two multiple World Championship winning riders in our team and we believe we have optimum chance to realise our ambitions.
The first of four pre-season tests gets underway in Sepang, Malaysia next week with the 18-round MotoGP season commencing in Qatar on March 9.

Desmosedici GP8

The new Desmosedici GP8 is an evolution of the 2007 model. We worked on all areas. In terms of chassis set-up, the new frame is lighter with optimised torsional and flexural rigidity. The rear suspension geometry is also different to reduce the ‘pumping’ effect. As for the engine we introduced a number of modifications to minimise friction and obtain a small power increase without affecting fuel consumption and we worked on rideability, to obtain a ‘fuller’ engine response especially mid-range and maintain peak power for longer. Finally, with regards to electronics, we modified a few details to increase reliability and consequently, safety. One of the main reasons of our presence in racing is to develop technology to be transferred to production bikes, improving safety and making them even more fun to ride. Electronics play an important role in all this. Panasonic to Build $2.8 Billion LCD Plant in Japan

Panasonic will also acquire almost all the shares of IPS Alpha Technology, an LCD panel manufacturing joint venture between Panasonic, Hitachi and Toshiba.

Panasonic is planning to invest ¥300 billion (US$2.8 billion) in a new LCD manufacturing plant in western Japan, it said Friday.

The investment was announced simultaneously with a deal that will see Panasonic acquire almost all the shares of IPS Alpha Technology, an LCD (liquid crystal display) panel manufacturing joint venture between Panasonic, Hitachi and Toshiba, and marks the latest chapter in an industry-wide realignment of the LCD business in Japan.

The new plant will be built in Himeji and will be a so-called eighth generation production line. That means it can process sheets of mother glass -- the large glass panels on which several LCD screens are made -- of 2.2 meters by 2.4 meters. Such sheets are best suited to production of 40-inch panels because eight screens can be made with minimal waste.

These aren't the monster panels in which rivals are currently investing billions of dollars, but that's because Panasonic is relying on PDP (plasma display panel) screens for its TV sets that are over 40 inches in size.
While Panasonic will pay for the new factory it will officially be owned by IPS Alpha Technology. Hitachi Display is currently the largest shareholder in the company with a 50 percent stake and Panasonic is second with a 30 percent share.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

It's been almost two years since Konica Minolta pulled out of the photo business and transferred its entire camera division to Sony, and well over a year since the first Sony DSLR (the DSLR-A100) was announced. Two years is a long time in the digital SLR market, but the three years Minolta (latterly Konica Minolta, now Sony) SLR users have been waiting for a high end model to replace the innovative Maxxum (Dynax) 7D must have felt like a lifetime. But, finally, it's here, and it looks very much like the mockup shown earlier in the year.
Like the A100, the new camera still wears its Konica Minolta heritage very much on its sleeve, and when you start to look a little more closely at the specification it's obvious that there's still an awful lot of Konica Minolta DNA in the A700. This is hardly surprising given that the circumstances behind its development.
And, just as the A100 was obviously based on - and designed to be a successor to - the KM 5D, the A700 follows on from the 7D, and - despite lots of Sony touches and an attractive new design - 7D users are likely to find using the new model reassuringly familiar.
But of course Sony doesn't only have existing system users in its cross hairs; the A700 is designed to go head to head with the latest 'prosumer' models from Nikon, Canon and Pentax. Whether the A700 offers enough to really put Sony on the DSLR map will be decided when we get to look properly at the image quality, but on specification, features and handling it certainly seems to have what it takes to play with the big boys.
Interestingly the one thing the A700 doesn't have is any form of live view; when we spoke to Sony about this the answer was simple; they believe that the compromises involved in current systems are satisfactory, and they won't implement live view until they can 'get it right'. Whether the lack of live view has any real relevance in a camera at this level remains to be seen; we doubt it.
The A700 shares many technologies with earlier Konica Minolta models (including, naturally, the lens mount), plus all those introduced in the A100 - though virtually all have been uprated or upgraded in one way or another (we've been told the A100 and A700 share virtually no components). From the sensor to the construction of the body to the GUI to the extensive feature set, this is a very different camera to the entry-level A100 (more of which later in this review). We'll start by looking at what's specifically new to this model:

Performance Results Mixed with Vista Service Pack 1

Microsoft's newly released Service Pack 1 may solve some of the performance glitches that have annoyed Windows Vista users and discouraged others from adopting the OS, but it doesn't appear from our initial tests to be a panacea.
In our first tests of the service pack, file copying, one of the main performance-related complaints from Vista users, was significantly faster. But other tests showed little improvement and in two tests, our experience was actually a little better without the service pack installed than with it.
Service Pack 1 was released to manufacturing yesterday, and officially sent out to reviewers today (Service Pack 1 was also unofficially unleashed today on BitTorrent, too). Service Pack 1 will be available to users in March, as a download; Microsoft plans to have SP1 integrated into Windows Vista at retail as well, but could not give a timeline on how quickly the update will be included in the retail version of Vista.
We've already covered many aspects of SP1 in previous looks at the initial SP1 beta last fall, and the more recent SP1 Release Candidate that became available in January. A quick recap: Though many of SP1's benefits lie hidden within the bowels of the OS (such as support for standards like Extensible Firmware Interface and Extended File Allocation Table), SP1 is packed with performance enhancements as well. According to Microsoft, more tangible improvements include improved performance when copying, compressing, and extracting files, improved boot and power down times, improved network performance, and other performance-related fixes.
I took the RTM of Vista Service Pack SP1 down to the PC World Test Center this afternoon and unleashed it across a variety of systems to see how it performed. These tests are preliminary and informal ones; the PC World Test Center is working on additional testing, and we'll post additional information--and update this story--as it comes available.

Service Pack 1: Installation
For my installation and file copy tests, I installed Service Pack 1 on a fairly high-end system: Polywell's $4000 Poly P3503-3DT, a model packed with a 3-GHz Core 2 Extreme QX6850 CPU, 4GB of memory, and Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.
The first thing I noticed during the installation process was Windows Vista's friendly warning that the installation might take an hour or more. My experience was, pleasantly, far from that: The installation process required just 27 minutes, less than half of what I experienced with the first beta of SP1 back in September 2007. Your experience may vary greatly, depending upon your system's configuration, though: A Dell Inspiron 1420 notebook (with 2.2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 CPU and 2GB of memory) required just 30 minutes to complete; but two other, less powerful systems took far longer to complete the installation.
SP1 required three reboots in all. During a good portion of the installation time, about 18 minutes, Vista reported it was just preparing the configuration, before actually proceeding with the installation.

Intel Quad Core Itanium Processor

Intel has told the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco that its new quad core Itanium processor will carry 2bn transistors.

The new 65-nanometer Tukwila Itanium processor, which is expected to be released at the end of this year, will run at up to 2 GHz, have dual-integrated memory controllers and use Intel's QuickPath interconnect instead of a front-side bus.

Itanium, which first hit the market in 2001, targets enterprise servers and high-performance computing machines.

Shiveley noted that Tukwila is expected to have double the performance of Montvale, another Itanium processor that was released late last year, while using only 25% more power. He added that the low power-consumption increase is based on new voltage frequency management technology.

What to Do When XP or 2000 Won't Boot

If Windows XP (or 2000) refuses to start, press F8 right after you turn on your PC but before the Windows log-on appears (it may take a few attempts to get the timing right). At the resulting menu, select Last Known Good Configuration to restore your Registry to an earlier date.

If this doesn't get your PC working, reboot and press F8 again, but this time select Safe Mode, and then choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Follow the wizard's instructions and pick an appropriate backup.

If you have a Microsoft Windows CD-ROM, you can get to the Recovery Console by booting from that CD and pressing any key when you're told to 'Press any key to boot from CD'. At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, press r for Repair.

If Windows XP or 2000 came with your computer and you don't have a Microsoft Windows CD-ROM, the Recovery Console might be on one of the CDs the vendor bundled with your PC. But it might not. Fortunately, the Recovery Console is hidden in a free, downloadable Microsoft program called Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install. Visit Microsoft's site to download the setup-disk file that works with XP Professional; available too is the XP Home version, which will also work for Windows 2000, Me, and 98.

When you run the download, it puts the XP installation program, including the Recovery Console, onto a set of six floppy disks. To get to the Recovery Console, boot from the first floppy, and then swap disks as prompted until you reach the 'Welcome to Setup' screen. Press r to open the Recovery Console.

We don't need no stinking grid—at least not all the time. These devices use the elements to charge your laptop, cell phone, and music player.

While the Consumer Electronics Association announced that it would go green by purchasing 20,000 tons' worth of carbon offsets, a few companies at CES 2008's Sustainable Technologies TechZone introduced new products that use fewer nonrenewable resources from the get-go. They're still a little pricey for the average consumer, but they show that both sunlight and water are viable power sources for laptops, iPods, cell phones, and other gadgets.

A lot of solar chargers work with small devices, but laptops generally have been left in the dark—until now. Voltaic Systems' Generator briefcase, scheduled for release this spring at a not-so-cheap $599, lets you plug your laptop into a rechargeable battery inside the case. A solar panel that covers one of the briefcase's sides provides the power. The battery inside is smart enough to know whether your laptop needs 12 or 20 volts, and Voltaic Systems bundles in a bunch of universal plugs that should fit many brands of products. The bag weighs 4 pounds with the battery, so it's not uber-light for a fabric bag. The fabric, by the way, is water-resistant and made of recycled PET plastic.
You need direct sunlight to get the best charge, though, and one laptop takes a day to charge.

Dazzling "double planet"
For the past several months, dazzling Venus has been prominent in our morning sky. And about a week ago, brilliant Jupiter also began to emerge from out of the glare of the Sun.
The two planets are currently rising out of the east-southeast horizon about two hours before sunrise.
From now through the end of January, the gap between the two will noticeably close, until on Feb. 1 they'll be separated by just over one-half degree, which is roughly the apparent width of the moon (The width of your fist, held at arm's length roughly corresponds to 10 degrees). Jupiter will shine brilliantly at magnitude -1.9, yet it will appear only 1/7 as bright as Venus, which will gleam at magnitude -4.0.
Together they will make for a spectacular "double planet" low in the dawn twilight. In the mornings thereafter they will appear to slowly separate, but before they have a chance to get too far apart the moon will join the picture.

Snow snarls transport, strands thousands in China

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Heavy snow and rain closed airports, highways and train lines across central and eastern China on Saturday, stranding tens of thousands of travelers and threatening to block food supplies.

Snowfall since mid-January has been "the heaviest in a decade," affecting about 32.9 million people and causing an estimated 6.23 billion yuan ($865 million) of damage, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The snow has collapsed homes, caused power blackouts and destroyed crops, causing the deaths of dozens of people in weather-related accidents.
By disrupting food supplies, the weather could also fuel inflation, which hit an 11-year high of 4.8 percent last year, becoming a major economic and social problem for the government.

At least five major airports, including those in Hunan's capital of Changsha and one in Nanjing, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu, were closed, state television said.
Highways around Nanjing were closed, as were 28 major roads in the southwestern province of Guizhou, where 27,000 travelers were stranded in bus stations, Xinhua reported.
In the eastern province of Anhui, 12,000 people were evacuated from dangerous locations because of the snow, it added.

The snowfall extended as far as China's commercial centre of Shanghai, which saw its heaviest snow this decade on Saturday, causing city authorities to promise to intervene in food markets to keep stable the prices of goods such as grains and milk, the official Liberation Daily said.
The National Meteorological Centre said some areas of central and eastern China could see at least three more days of snow.

Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates announced a new direction Friday as he pledged $306 million in grants to develop farming in poor countries, leading the charge for corporate responsibility at a major meeting of business chiefs.
The announcement by Gates, who is to step down from the computer giant later this year, drew attention from the financial woes that have dominated the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Gates received a standing ovation for his announcement at the suggestion of U2 frontman Bono.
The move, the first foray into agriculture by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will help boost efforts by the annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland to shake off its image as a billionaire's talking shop that does little to solve the problems it discusses.
"If we are serious about ending extreme hunger and poverty around the world, we must be serious about transforming agriculture for small farmers, most of whom are women," Gates said.

Hitachi Terabyte Hard Drive

At first blush, the idea of a terabyte hard drive seems almost ludicrous. Who needs that much storage?

Anyone asking that question is probably just running a few office apps and browsing the web. Anyone with any substantial quantity of digital media automatically gets it. On our primary home system, we have a 500GB RAID 1 array, with only about 130GB free—and that's only with constant monitoring, uninstalling bulky games, and limiting the amount of digital media stored on the system.

Hitachi network houses a terabyte RAID 5 array, with five 200GB hard drives. Since it's RAID 5, the array has "only" 770GB or so of effective space—and it's 70% full. Some of that, of course, has to do with work-related stuff. There's a dedicated volume just for benchmarks, which takes up several hundred gigabytes by itself. Increasingly, however, large digital media files—photos, video, music, and games—take up vast amounts of drive space. So a terabyte hard drive begins to feel like a necessity, not just a luxury—for some of us, at any rate.
Let's take a look at the first terabyte hard drive, the Deskstar 7K1000 from Hitachi Global Storage, and see just how it performs.

Energy Fuel Cells

The long-lasting, environmentally friendly fuel cell is one of the most hotly pursued technologies of the decade, one in which the world's largest companies—from auto giants to computer makers—are investing heavily. If successful, fuel cells could not only hasten a shift in our energy infrastructure but also power mobile computers all day on a single charge.

The first wave of fuel cell adoption is likely to happen with miniature, methanol-based fuel cells for laptops, tablet computers, handhelds, and cell phones. Such fuel cells promise longer life and ultimately lower expenses, because methanol costs next to nothing.

Toshiba recently demonstrated a prototype of a direct methanol fuel cell that can power a notebook PC for 5 hours. Fed by a small cartridge of methanol, this type of cell works by converting chemical energy directly into electricity. The by-products are oxygen and water, which are recycled back into the cell. About the size of a notebook port replicator, the cell is neither as portable nor as long-lasting as consumers need, but it is a significant step. Toshiba plans to start selling it next year.

The most viable transition technology to the fuel cell car is the hybrid car, which combines an internal-combustion engine with heavy-duty nickel hydride batteries that recharge via the kinetic energy generated when a car brakes. Toyota is already selling a hybrid model, the Prius, and others are expected soon.

All computer viruses are manmade. A simple virus that can make a copy of itself over and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such a simple virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all available memory and bring the system to a halt. An even more dangerous type of virus is one capable of transmitting itself across networks and bypassing security systems.
Since 1987, when a virus infected ARPANET, a large network used by the Defense Department and many universities, many antivirus programs have become available. These programs periodically check your computer system for the best-known types of viruses.

Some people distinguish between general viruses and worms. A worm is a special type of virus that can replicate itself and use memory, but cannot attach itself to other programs.

A computer virus attaches itself to a program or file so it can spread from one computer to another, leaving infections as it travels.
Almost all viruses are attached to an executable file, which means the virus may exist on your computer but it cannot infect your computer unless you run or open the malicious program.

A worm is similar to a virus by its design, and is considered to be a sub-class of a virus. Worms spread from computer to computer, but unlike a virus, it has the capability to travel without any help from a person. A worm takes advantage of file or information transport features on your system, which allows it to travel unaided. The biggest danger with a worm is its capability to replicate itself on your system, so rather than your computer sending out a single worm, it could send out hundreds or thousands of copies of itself, creating a huge devastating effect. Due to the copying nature of a worm and its capability to travel across networks the end result in most cases is that the worm consumes too much system memory (or network bandwidth)

The Trojan Horse, at first glance will appear to be useful software but will actually do damage once installed or run on your computer. Those on the receiving end of a Trojan Horse are usually tricked into opening them because they appear to be receiving legitimate software or files from a legitimate source. Some Trojans are designed to be more annoying than malicious (like changing your desktop, adding silly active desktop icons) or they can cause serious damage by deleting files and destroying information on your system. Unlike viruses and worms, Trojans do not reproduce by infecting other files nor do they self-replicate.

Brontok is a computer worm which spreads through emails and USB drives. There are so many variants of brontok but they basically work similarly. If your computer infected with brontok, you can’t start Regedit.exe, when trying to start any other registry editor, the system restarts. The system also restarts when executing certain EXE files.
